Brian Wilson's new epic failure

Brian Wilson, former Beach Boy and the mastermind behind the group's legendary album, "Pet Sounds," has released a follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2004 release, "Smile." Wilson's new album, "That Lucky Old Sun" can be summed up in a single word, garbage. Perhaps that is too strong, but after listening to this album and realizing that maybe one or two tracks are decent one cannot help but feel that "Smile" should have been Wilson's last hurrah. Maybe it is has been because he has been called a musical genius since his early twenties, but there is quite the difference between creative and hubris. This album is nothing but Wilson's ego showing he can release anything and the critics will worship it.The track, "Morning Beat" seems like some awful track Wilson wrote back in the 1960s. It rehashes the Beach Boys' typical sound prior to "Pet Sounds" and the chorus feels like pins stabbing the brain. Peoples' trial heads to closing arguments

Common Pleas Court Judge Anthony Sarcione, presiding over the trial, sent the 12 jurors and two alternates home Thursday after the prosecution rested. The jury is scheduled to hear closing statements from the two attorneys in the case this morning.Testimony Thursday centered around the version of events given by the victim in the case, Edgar "Juice" Barber, who said that he saw Peoples' face in the front seat of a station wagon that pulled alongside him at the Regency Park Apartments just before he was shot.Although more than a dozen shots were fired, Barber, 30, was shot only once — in the back. He recovered from the wounding within a month.Peoples, 31, is accused of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy in the Jan. 9, 2006, incident. Two other men, Donte "DC" Carter and Shamone "Tex" Kennedy, have also been charged.In his testimony, Barber spoke about the history of good times and bad times that he and Peoples had gone through in their lives in the city...

UC Berkeley Embarrasses Its Alumnae One More Time

It’s been an unpleasant few days around here. All weekend long, and for two days later the ominous drone of circling helicopters was heard at our house, as if we were in a war zone. University of California in its majesty was administering the coup de grace to the hapless romantics perched atop the skeleton of the lone redwood which temporarily survived the assault of the Monarch of the West. Neighbors called wondering if they’d missed some major catastrophe. The Planet heard from many readers vainly hoping we’d know what was going on and how to stop it. Friends who lived here during the culture wars of the 1960s say this was nothing. Then it was troops and tear gas.
